Digital Nomad Residency

Your business stays in Egypt. Your family lives in Spain.

A long, honest guide to the Spanish Digital Nomad Visa for Egyptian entrepreneurs — what it requires, what it really costs to qualify, where files fail, and what your first months in Spain look like.

What This Visa Is

Residency for people whose income is earned outside Spain.

The Digital Nomad Visa lets you live in Spain while you keep running your business — or keep working for your company — from abroad. You do not need a Spanish employer, a Spanish company, or a large investment.

It is the route I recommend most often to Egyptian entrepreneurs, because it matches how you already work: clients, contracts and revenue that stay where they are, and a family that finally has a European base. Unlike the Non-Lucrative Visa, it allows you to work — as long as that work is for clients or companies outside Spain (a small share of Spanish clients is allowed for freelancers, up to 20% of your activity).

I have sat in this exact conversation with many Egyptian business owners. Most arrive with the same three questions: Am I eligible? How much do I need to show? Who will make sure nothing goes wrong? This page answers the first two in detail. The third is my job.

The Eight Requirements

What your file actually needs to contain.

01
Remote work for foreign clients
An employment or business relationship with companies outside Spain. At least 80% of your income must come from non-Spanish sources.
02
A business with history
The company or clients you work with should be established, and your relationship with them should predate the application — I check this with you early, because it is where most weak files start.
03
Qualification or experience
A university degree or recognised professional qualification, or at least 3 years of professional experience in your field.
04
Monthly income above the threshold
Documented, regular income in euros per month — exact figures in the next section.
05
Private health insurance
Full coverage valid in Spain, no co-payments and no waiting periods, from an insurer authorised to operate here.
06
Clean criminal record
Certificates covering the last 5 years from every country you lived in, legalised and officially translated.
07
Valid passport
With enough validity left and blank pages. Egyptian passports renew easily — do it before you file, not after.
08
Legal status where you file
You file either at the Spanish consulate in your country, or from inside Spain while you are there legally — and the choice changes your timeline. See below.
The Income You Need To Show — In Real Numbers

What you earn each month, by family size.

I plan every file around round, comfortable figures. A file that sits exactly on the legal minimum is a file that gets questioned; a file that clears it with room does not.

Main applicant
Exact legal minimum today: about €2,849 / month
€3,000 / mo
You + spouse
Exact legal minimum: about €3,917 / month
€4,000 / mo
Family of 3
Exact legal minimum: about €4,273 / month
€4,400 / mo
Family of 4
Exact legal minimum: about €4,629 / month
€4,800 / mo
Family of 6
Exact legal minimum: about €5,341 / month
€5,500 / mo

The legal minimum is reviewed every year with Spain's minimum wage, so the exact figure moves. I confirm the current number with the lawyers before anything is filed. Income is proven with contracts, invoices, company records and bank statements — and for Egyptian businesses, how those are presented matters as much as the amount.

What Is Different For Egyptians

The details that catch Egyptian applicants off guard.

Many of my clients are Egyptian entrepreneurs — business owners, consultants, agency founders, traders, engineers with their own companies. You are not a special case to me. You are, honestly, a very common one. That is exactly why I know where the problems appear.

"You have probably spoken to people who said it depends, then disappeared after payment. I do the opposite: I tell you in the first conversation whether your case works, what it needs, and what could stop it."

Taxes, Honestly

If you live here, expect to pay tax here.

Years ago, some digital nomads lived in Spain and paid very little. That has changed. Today you should plan on becoming a Spanish tax resident, taxed on a progressive scale on your income. Spending fewer days in Spain is not a guaranteed way to avoid this, and I will never tell you it is.

What I do instead: on our call I take your real income figure and show you, in euros, roughly what you would pay under the ordinary scale — and the lawyers confirm it before anything is submitted. You decide with the real number in front of you. Many clients still choose Spain by a wide margin once they see it, because of what the move gives their family.

The Process

From first call to your life in Spain.

01
Confidential case review
We go through your business, income, family and timing. If the Digital Nomad Visa is not right for you, I say so and tell you which route is.
02
Strategy before documents
The lawyers and I design the file before a single document is gathered. We never submit a case we are not confident will be approved.
03
Documents, legalisation, translations
I give you a precise list and the correct order. Insurance, criminal records, income evidence and family certificates all come together here.
04
Filing
Filed either at the consulate or from inside Spain. When filed from inside Spain, the authorities have a legal period of about 20 working days that starts once the file is complete; in practice, plan for more total time to cover preparation and the card. I give you a realistic timeline for your case.
05
Approval and residency card (TIE)
After approval you complete the fingerprint appointment and receive your physical card. I come with you in person.
06
Renewals, then permanent residency
Filed from inside Spain, the first permit is for 3 years, then renewed. Renewals require you to still meet every condition, so your income has to stay in order. After 5 continuous years you can apply for permanent residency.
Life After Approval

The visa is the beginning. I stay for the rest.

This is where most advisors disappear. I do not. Residency is only useful if your first months in Spain actually work, and that is the part nobody prepares you for.

Why Files Fail

The five mistakes I see most often.

Questions I Get Asked

Straight answers.

Can I bring my wife and children?

Yes. Your spouse and dependent children can be included in the application. The income requirement rises with each family member — see the table above.

Do I have to close or move my business in Egypt?

No. The visa is built for businesses that stay outside Spain. What matters is that the income is real, regular and documented.

Can I take Spanish clients?

Freelancers may work for Spanish companies as long as that does not exceed 20% of their activity. If your plan includes Spanish clients, tell me early.

Will I pay tax in Spain?

Plan on it. Living in Spain generally makes you a Spanish tax resident. I show you the estimated figure in euros before you decide.

Can I apply while I am already in Spain?

If you are legally in Spain, often yes — and that route can give a longer first permit. It depends on your situation and I confirm it with you on the call.

Does the visa lead to Spanish citizenship?

It leads to permanent residency after 5 continuous years, and citizenship becomes possible after longer residency. Your children grow up with a European base — that is often what clients care about most.

Is the information on this page enough to apply?

No. It tells you what the visa requires. It does not tell you whether it fits your case, how to present your income, or how to time the move around your business. That part is personal.
